"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I am Bernard Allen II. I was born in Vance County, NC. Before I reached the age of 5, my parents - the late North Carolina State Representative Bernard Allen Sr. and Mrs. Vivian S. Allen, moved me and my younger brother, Andre to Raleigh.
During my formative years, I attended Poe Elementary School, Aycock Middle School and Enloe High School, all located in Southeast Raleigh. After high school graduation, I matriculated to North Carolina A and T State University in Greensboro, NC and later returned home to Raleigh to graduate from St. Augustine’s University. My education continued with graduate studies at Shaw University Divinity School.
I married Amy Hussey in 1989. She is from Kinston NC and is a graduate of North Carolina State University. We have one son, Bernard Allen lll, who graduated from Elizabeth City State University in December, 2015.
Like myself, our son attended schools in Southeast Raleigh. My wife and I were active parent volunteers while our son was in school because we realized that parents, teachers, students and the community, working together helps to ensure the success of our students.
I served as PTA President at Bugg Elementary School. During my tenure as president there, we implemented "EOG" Power Night, a very successful program which involved the parents, their students , the teachers, businesses, and community leaders. Power Nights involved intensive study for end of grade testing. As a result of the program, our school scores improved significantly. While my son was at Carnage Middle School, I again served as PTA president, where I continued to encourage parent and community involvement in our schools.
My professional career consists of 13 years of state government experience with various roles in emergency response, procurement, and management training. I have also worked with the State Employees' Association, traveling and advocating for state government employees and retirees particularly regarding working conditions, salaries and healthcare. Presently, I am an independent life insurance agent with NC Mutual Life Insurance Company specializing in affordable healthcare and life insurance.
I began my political career at an early age attending community meetings with my father, learning the importance of community service and activism. I have served in many civic organizations in a leadership capacity including Treasurer for the Raleigh Wake Citizens Association, Raleigh Chairman of the Wake County Democratic Party and Political Social Action Chairman of the Raleigh Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
Southeast Raleigh is the heart and soul of our community. Let's work together to strengthen NC District 33, the heart beat of Southeast Raleigh.
